A Systemic Review of Research on Perceived Discrimination and Health in South Korea
Son In-Seo

Kim Seung-Sup
Abstract
Although the association between perceived discrimination and health has been a main issue in public health, there has been little systematic discussion in a South Korean context. This study sought to systematically review the existing literature on discrimination and health in South Korea and present several suggestions for future research. Selected through online academic databases in English and Korean, 52 empirical journal articles are reviewed for this study. A systemic review identifies four main characteristics among the studies on perceived discrimination and health in South Korea. First, the studies have been published since 2003 and dramatically increased since 2010. Second, most studies have utilized quantitative methods (N=46) with most of them analyzed cross-sectional data (N=45), while five qualitative methods (N=5). Third, the majority of studies focused on mental health (N=42). Forth, the studies dealt with a variety of population groups including foreigners/immigrants (N=21), the elderly (N=12), and the disabled (N=7). Our critical review suggests several recommendations for future research. First, the overlooked forms of discrimination, for instance, based on education, employment status, and appearance, need to be examined in South Korea. Second, a more critical approach toward perceived discrimination scales is required for future research. Third, researchers need to explore other health outcomes beyond mental health outcomes. Forth, more studies with longitudinal dataset are required given that there was only one cohort study. Fifth, future studies should explore an intersectional nature of discrimination and its impact on health.-57
